iTMA ——// Vision

Saving Portugal starts with getting organised

Portugal can improve when people bring together knowledge, work and a willingness to participate. ITMA — the Technical Institute for Improvement and Autonomy — aims to build that community: one capable of identifying problems, developing solutions and demanding accountability in the management of what belongs to everyone.

For us, saving Portugal means creating the conditions to live with dignity, work with prospects for the future, find an affordable home and receive timely healthcare. It means valuing our local areas, making better use of resources and giving people a greater ability to participate in decisions that affect their lives.

This change can happen without another 25 April revolution. We want to honour the freedom won in April through democratic, peaceful and ongoing participation. Organising citizens, studying problems, presenting proposals and monitoring results are ways of making that freedom part of everyday life.

We want a patriotic, non-partisan ITMA, independent of political parties and respectful of each member’s choices. Our commitment is to Portugal, to people and to the common good. Belonging to this community should allow for different opinions, united by the desire to improve the country.

Housing, healthcare, the cost of living, borrowing costs, tax fairness and the use of public money are areas in which we want to encourage research, debate and concrete proposals. We also want to discuss immigration using evidence, with an insistence on compliance with the law, integration and respect for human rights.

ITMA’s contribution begins with its technical mission: bringing skills together, sharing knowledge, recovering resources and developing projects that increase communities’ autonomy. In Manteigas, the SOTAVE VIVA vision can put this work into practice, connecting the restoration of spaces with training, economic activity and local development.

Each proposal should explain the problem it aims to solve, the resources needed, the costs, who is responsible and how results will be assessed. This is how we want to turn frustration with promises that deliver no results into work that everyone can follow.

Our ambition is to bring together one million members over the long term. That growth will have to be built through trust, active participation and demonstrable results. We want a community capable of presenting well-founded proposals, engaging with institutions and applying legitimate civic pressure so that problems receive a response.

Members should be able to contribute to ITMA’s priorities and take part in consultative votes on issues and projects. In these consultations, votes linked to each voter’s identity will be visible only to members. We want to hear the arguments of those who agree and those who disagree, because understanding an objection can reveal a problem and improve a proposal.

The transparency we demand from institutions should begin within ITMA: understandable accounts, funding sources, spending criteria, defined responsibilities and declared conflicts of interest. Those who represent the community should account for the work carried out and the decisions taken.

The Constitution recognises freedom of association, participation in public life and the right to petition. We want to exercise those rights responsibly, through proposals, requests for clarification, public participation and engagement with the competent authorities. Constitution of the Portuguese Republic, Articles 46, 48 and 52.

The use of public-interest action (ação popular) will be considered case by case, with legal support and compliance with the legal requirements, including those governing associations’ standing to bring proceedings. It will serve to defend the collective interests protected by law when there are grounds for such action. Law No. 83/95, Articles 1 to 3.

We want to build a Portugal where the ability to contribute finds its place, where resources are managed responsibly and where communities have the strength to improve their living conditions. That journey begins with each project, each well-founded decision and each person who participates.

ITMA — Improve what exists. Build what is missing.

01 / Why we exist

Knowledge for the public good.

Autonomy
begins with
understanding.

We aim to bring citizens, technical professionals and researchers together to improve the systems we depend on every day.

ITMA is a Portuguese initiative for applied engineering and collaboration, with a nonprofit purpose. It grew out of a desire to make better use of existing resources, test solutions and make technical knowledge accessible.

Our approach is simple: observe a problem, test an improvement and document what has been learned. With rigour, responsibility and room for everyone to take part.

01

Energy and resources

Energy efficiency, responsible water use and system improvements. Measuring consumption to understand where we can do better.

02

Mobility and systems

Exploring mobility solutions and technical improvements, with attention to safety, reliability and resource use.

LOCAL DEVELOPMENT / MANTEIGASProject in preparation

SOTAVE VIVA

Bringing an industrial space back to life through production, learning and community.

In Manteigas, SOTAVE VIVA aims to create a living laboratory where agriculture, food, culture and technology meet. A place to grow, experiment, come together and share knowledge, connected to the local area and its people.

Grow in full view of visitors, serve what is grown, sell directly and turn every visit into an experience.

Planned first phase · around 500 m²

Bar Vivo from the start

A café-bar among plants, with tastings, direct sales and cultural activities. Bar Vivo is part of the first phase and central to both the visitor experience and the project’s economic sustainability.

Growing in plain sight

Chillies, edible flowers and microgreens grown in controlled systems, including hydroponics and a plant nursery. A transparent partition lets visitors follow production and understand the journey from plant to product.

Learning by doing

Workshops and demonstrations on sensors, automation, water and sustainability. The aim is to make technology understandable by showing how to measure, experiment and improve growing systems.

A vision with room to grow

Future development envisages a growers’ cooperative, a community garden and aquaponics experiments, starting with an independent pilot and exploring the use of water from the trout facility. These components will be developed in stages.

ITMA’s planned contribution

Through ITMA AGRO, the planned contribution includes preparing trials, integrating sensors, measuring water and energy use, documenting results and sharing methods. SOTAVE VIVA could become a space for demonstration and learning open to the community.

Proposal in development. The facilities and activities depend on municipal assessment, applicable permits and the conditions needed to bring the project to life.

Our method

Learn by doing.
Improve by sharing.

  1. 01

    Observe

Understand the problem and define what we want to improve.

  2. 02

    Experiment

Test, measure and compare results using clear criteria.

  3. 03

    Share

Document the method, results and limitations.

04 / Responsibility and transparency

Grow on
a clear foundation.

01

A community in the making

ITMA is a personal project led by Daniel Filipe da Conceição Saraiva and has not yet been formally established as an association or institute. Formal establishment will proceed once enough participants have joined and donations cover the necessary costs. At this stage, “members” means participants in the project community.

02

Documented objectives and spending

Our commitment is to explain the purpose of the resources and report how they are used as activities take shape.

03

Results that can be verified

We aim to make methods, data and conclusions available, distinguishing ideas under investigation from demonstrated results.

05 / Get involved

The next step
is taken together.

ITMA grows with people who believe in the value of knowledge and our ability to improve the world around us.

Your experience, ideas and support are part of building that future.
